WTF Water Closet

previous post: No Porpoise

  1. The Beast Among Us

Almost an original John Crapper Indoor Water Closet.

  2. We’ve been house hunting for 3 years & have seen numerous homes with toilets installed in unexpected places (mostly in homes originally built with only one bathroom…many years ago 3-4 bedroom, 1 bath homes were quite common). Garages, closets, tool shed (still lots of room to store tools), my faves were a pantry closet right next to the fridge (the door closed right against the front of the toilet, so you’d have to straddle it to use it with the door closed) & an actual outhouse built right in the backyard in plain view of the neighbors’ yards. Likely most of them were built without permits & violate building codes.

  3. Both my mom’s and brother’s houses have functional toilets in the basement with no walls around them (not installed by my family). While they’re not ideal for everyday use, in an emergency…I hear ya, crazyo.

  4. And, in both cases, installing walls wouldn’t work well. My mom’s is near the water heater and walls would make it hard to get to that. My brother’s is near the laundry, and walls would make it literally impossible to get to the washer and dryer. Again, they don’t see much use, but there have been cases where someone says it’s urgent and we say “go downstairs, we promise we’ll stay up here.”

^ You know they can be moved, right? So can the other appliances.

  6. Yea, but I think this is a hotel, that’s the whole point of the pic.
